Derivative of “trio A”
“Derivative of Trio A” explores the tension between postmodern dance’s resistance to analytical frameworks and AI’s inherent drive to analyze and categorize. In this work, a dancer was asked to recreate “Trio A”, the influential postmodern dance by Yvonne Rainer, using only a list of descriptions of that work generated by AI.
As the process unfolds, the original work is gradually “unbuilt,” translated into language and then back into movement. Each sentence becomes a fragment, each fragment a gesture, producing a choreography that drifts away from its source while quietly carrying its trace. What emerges is not a reconstruction, but a derivative - something unstable, incomplete, and newly alive.
Set against the growing presence of algorithmic systems in everyday life, this dance film reframes AI not as a neutral tool, but as a force that reshapes how the past is remembered, interpreted, and embodied. "Derivative of Trio A" lingers in this in-between space, asking not only how memory becomes instruction, but how authorship and agency shift when machine logic is filtered through human embodiment.
The dancer starts facing the left side of the frame with her arms behind her back. She pivots to face the front, then the right side, swinging her arms out to the sides and up, parallel to the ground. This sequence is performed with a smooth, flowing energy. She continues to face right and steps forward. She then lifts her right leg forward, bends at the waist, and lifts the leg higher behind her, demonstrating graceful and precise movement with careful balance. The dancer lowers her body, bending at the waist until her upper body is parallel to the ground. She then quickly stands up, raises both arms overhead, and brings them down to a chest level, showing a transition from a controlled descent to a series of sharp, deliberate motions. She walks with a slightly hunched posture, her hands clasped on top of her head. Her pace is slow and deliberate. She then walks forward, swinging her arms out in a wide, controlled motion, transitioning back to an upright stance. The dancer performs a subtle, rhythmic sequence by lifting her feet slightly, almost marching in place with a soft and bouncy energy. She then abruptly shifts to a low squat before transitioning to a kneeling position on the floor. The dancer first turns to her right side and brings her left leg up while on her knees. She then lifts her body and straightens up her arms, then goes on to her stomach. She continues the movement by lifting herself up on her hands and then returns to a standing position. After standing, she lifts her arms straight above her head, turns, and brings her arms back down. She raises her arms again to shoulder height while stepping forward with her right foot. She begins to lift her right leg up, keeping it straight. She lifts it higher with each repetition while moving her arms in an upward motion. She turns to the right and bends her left knee, lifting her right leg. She goes down to the ground, keeping her hands on the floor. She slowly goes on her back and gets up in a crouched position. She straightens up her back to a standing position and turns her head to the left, then back to the center. With her arms held out to her side, she bends her knees and lifts her left leg up. She brings her left leg to her right leg and returns to a standing position. She repeats this motion with the right leg. She turns and walks forward, lifting her left leg. She moves her hips from side to side while walking. Her energy is more fluid in this interval, as she moves from a stationary position to walking. The dancer's movements are slow and deliberate. She holds a pose with her right foot raised behind her while slowly tilting her head back. Her body is still, emphasizing the subtle movement of her head. The energy shifts as she quickly drops into a low crouch and then stands back up. She takes a few steps forward and then collapses onto the floor, first kneeling and then lying down completely. The movements are sudden and seem to be driven by a change of pace. After collapsing to the floor, her movements become slow and fluid as she rolls from her side onto her stomach and then sits up. She kneels and bends her body forward until her head touches the floor. This segment focuses on controlled, low-to-the-ground movements. The dancer rises to a standing position with her back to the camera. She then begins a series of sharp, angular motions, bending her knees into a squat and raising her arms in a rigid manner. The energy here is more mechanical and less fluid than the previous movements. She repeats the squat, but this time turning to the side. She then quickly bends her body forward from a standing position until her head is facing the floor. The movements are quick and precise, almost robotic. The dancer's movements become more expressive and dynamic as she twists her torso and raises her arms to the sides. She then transitions into a series of head shakes while bending forward and concludes the segment with a full body arch, looking upwards as she stands. The dancer moves from a slumped standing position, with her head hanging down, to an upright stance as she walks forward with her arms outstretched to the sides. The movements are deliberate and slow, with a low energy. The dancer performs a side-to-side shuffle, punctuated by a quick change in direction. She then bends forward, touching the floor with her right hand, followed by a quick leg kick to the side before returning to a straight posture. The energy is quick and precise. Starting with a low crouch, the dancer extends her right hand forward, rises to a standing position, and then does a small, quick kick to her right side, moving in a small, circular path. The energy is a mixture of slow and quick movements. The dancer moves across the floor, pausing to bend forward and touch the ground with her hands, followed by a quick roll onto her back. The energy of this sequence is fluid and continuous. Lying on her back, the dancer lifts her legs up and over her head, then rolls onto her stomach before sitting up. She then rises to a standing position, bending forward from the waist. The movements are slow and deliberate, with a low energy. The dancer raises her hands to her head, then brings her arms down in front of her with her palms facing down, as if pushing something away. She repeats this motion multiple times while turning from side to side. The energy is a continuous, pushing force. The dancer stands with her hands crossed over her chest, then slowly extends them outward, palms down. Her movements are fluid as she turns to her right, her arms remaining extended. The energy is controlled and deliberate. She turns back to her left, crossing her arms again. She then lifts her left leg and crosses it over her right, holding the position briefly. The movement is precise and balanced. The dancer steps to the right and lifts her hands, then her left knee. The movement is quick and has a sense of upward energy. She then steps back, swinging her arms down as if they are heavy weights. She moves forward in a low, hunched posture, her hands almost touching the floor. The energy of this movement feels grounded and heavy. She rises and twists her body, with her arms following in a downward arc. She stands upright again, then steps forward with a high knee lift, her leg kicking out as she lands. She drops into a low crouch, her hands moving along the floor as she transitions. The movement is a combination of quick, dynamic action followed by a smooth descent. The dancer kicks her right leg behind her while bending her left knee, creating a lunge. She brings her leg down, and then performs a series of quick, low lunges, her body moving in a fluid, continuous motion. The dancer moves with a loose and fluid energy, extending her arm out as she bends forward at the waist. She then brings her body upright, raises one knee, and then kicks out to the side with a sharp, quick motion. She turns to her right, then to her left, with her arms out to her sides. The dancer's movements become sharper and more contained, as she alternates between standing with her right leg bent and held high and kicking it out. She then slowly turns around in a circle to face the back wall of the stage. She turns her body to the left and back to the right in quick succession while raising her left leg. This is followed by a dynamic movement where she springs into a handstand, with her legs splayed in the air, before collapsing to the floor in a grounded, fluid motion. The dancer lies on her stomach and then rolls onto her back before pulling herself up to a seated position. She then rolls over onto her hands and knees and comes to a standing position in a quick, deliberate motion. The dancer's movements are quick and continuous as she steps to her left with her right foot forward and her arms at her sides. She then turns her body to the right as she brings her arms toward her chest, and then quickly changes direction, turning to the left with her arms out to the sides.
